Kidney Disease

Kidney Failure is common in older pets. Signs include drinking more, going off their food, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhoea, smelly breath, poor coat condition, poor vision, increased frequency of urination and recurring cystitis.

Chronic kidney disease can be well treated and the earlier the symptoms are picked up, the much better the long term prognosis. We will be able to determine the severity of the disease by testing the urine and blood. Treatment of chronic failure includes changing the food to a special salt restricted diet such as Hills k/d and using medication to promote blood supply to the kidneys such as Fortekor. We will need to carefully monitor the condition as kidney degeneration causes changes to the blood pressure and heart, if the blood pressure gets too high there is a risk of sudden blindness as the blood vessels in the eye literally burst.
