Rare case for Labrador
26th August 2011
We've seen a very rare case this week in a 7year old Labrador. He came in with a lame leg and was just not his usual bouncy self. Catrina examined him and discovered that the nerves to his leg weren't functioning properly and also he had a high grade heart mumur. So putting the two things together the most likely diagnosis was a very rare condition called Endocarditis, which is due to a chronic infection of the heart valves. What happens ? Clumps of blood and infected matter gather on the valves inside the heart, and they can break off at any time and seed into the body system, in his case blocking the nerves to the back leg. After further tests including blood tests, an ECG and heart ultrasound scan we made a definite diagnosis of Endocarditis and started aggressive treatment with a drip, antibiotics and intensive nursing care. Five days later he's ready to leave Abbeyfields and go home, not completely out of the woods, but we are very hopeful of a full recovery.

Beware of grass seeds!
5th August 2011
It's that time of year when we are seeing grass seeds causing problems to dogs! We seem to be finding them in all sorts of places, deep in ear canals, up noses, inbetween toes and very occasionally under the eyelids! It is surprisingly common especially in labradors and springer spaniels so if your dog has a sore eye, sore foot or sore ear come and get them checked out!
