Two police dogs that die

30 June 2011

Very sad news about the two police dogs that died in the car over the weekend. Even with the windows open dogs will rapidly succumb to overheating as they can't loose body temperature - they can't sweat like people.

Generally large dogs are more at risk than smaller dogs. Last year we saw a Dogue De Bordeaux that had been on a half hour walk in the midday sun and he almost died from overheating. He quickly became very poorly and needed intensive care for several days, with severe, but fortunately reversible , kidney failure.

Never leave a dog in a car on a warm day; it doesn't have to be sunny. During summer months make sure you walk your dog in the early morning or late afternoon/evening. If you are concerned your dog has become too hot, if they are constantly panting, drinking lots, a bit down or vomiting, put a cold wet towel over them and phone a vet asap. All uk vets provide a 24hour emergency service. The lovely black and white cat that was biought into us yesterday after a road traffic accident is recovering well and has been reunited with his owners
