Welcome to Abbeyfields

The Clinic

Abbeyfields Clinic

Abbeyfields Veterinary Centre has evolved from simple beginnings. The Surgery was opened in May 1994 by the Senior Vet – Julie Gray.

But times have changed – people use the world wide web to source so many parts of their life: they want advice and services at the push of a button, to see somewhere before they visit, communicate at their convenience out of Surgery hours. Hence roots to the site you are viewing today.

The field of Veterinary Medicine is changing quickly to large multi-centre practices and corporate chains. Here we are keen to resist that change and keep our unique identity, where clients can become familiar with the whole team.

“Abbeyfields” reflects the long history of Rocester, dating from the 1500’s where an Abbey stood near the Practice boundary. We wanted to embrace the history of the location in which we are fortunate to work. More importantly, the Practice Abbeyfields brings to the fore our commitment to a team effort for your pets’ care. Your contentment as a client and your pet’s wellbeing are a product of our team approach where everyone has an important role to play.

Equipment and Facilities

The most important thing we can offer are the Vets and team of nurses with enthusiasm for your pet and time to listen. Consults are scheduled for 15 minute appointments. More time is available if you need it.

As well as the standard radiographic facilities for Xrays, machines for blood testing including haematology,
biochemistry, hormones and even clotting profiles,

We are equipped with:

ECG machines and monitors,
Blood Pressure monitors,
Endoscope,
Glaucoma and ophthalmic equipment

A high specification Ultrasound machine which supercedes our previous model and offers exceptional non- invasive abdominal and heart scans in all our patient sizes.

Practice News

The Carpark has been resurfaced in the area of the rear entrance, which has made the whole area much safer for clients and their pets. The furthest part is waiting an upgrade also, but plans are underway to develop redundant buildings in the rear Carpark to provide us with much needed more space. That means a delay in the final surface completion.

Our enthusiastic Vet Lucy Chapman has been with us for over 2 years now and is an exceptional find. Its great to have a professional with such a genuine empathy and interest in her patients. Clients can trust her medical and surgery skills with confidence. But best of all, Lucy genuinely likes each individual pet! Total care follows on from this and Lucy’s dedication is rewarded many fold. One thing we still chuckle about is Lucy’s training of her own dog Roxy. Most recently she managed to chew through the Practice burglar alarm system. That was an interesting fault for the electrician to find!

The nurses are familiar to all who visit. Both Claire and Mandie are well known to our many client and remmain trusted and key members of the team. Daina qualified as a Veterinary Nurse RVN in 2008. We have been lucky to engage a new trainee - Rosie Campbell whose formal training commences in September 2009. The Practice enjoys "Training Practice" status with the RCVS and our links with Melbourne based "Bottle Green" veterinary nurse training. Last, but not least, Sarah has rejoined us on a part time basis, after several years raising her young family. She can be found on reception, telephone and keenly promoting the Practice's facilities.

Emergency Services

The Practice undertakes to provide its own Out of Hours Service. When the surgery is closed, clients are asked to telephone the Surgery number - 01889 590449 - where a recorded message will tell them the number of the Emergency Vet, and whose mobile phone they should subsequently dial. The telephone is answered by a vet and very occasionally a nurse may be the first person you speak to. Surgery closes at 12 noon on Saturdays and the emergency number is available from Saturday afternoon until 8.30 am on Monday morning. Again, just call 01889 590449 for out help.

Changes to Pharmacy Rules.

A ruling has been made which allows any pet owner to request a prescription from their Veterinary Surgeon, to purchase their medicines from what ever source they choose. These prescriptions are chargeably at £6.90 at the current time. Clients must be aware that all Practices are advised to follow good dispensing practice for animals under their care. There by comes a requirement to attend for regular check ups, which will probably be chargeable. The frequency of checks depends very much upon each individual case. But in simple terms the on line drug store may provide a cost effective and convenient way to purchase your medicines. Remember – a Veterinary Surgeon with knowledge of the medicines effects in animals is in charge of all dispensing!

Where are we up to as a Practice?

The Practice has had a name change to Abbeyfields in the past 18 months, but staff and ownership remains the same . Coupled this we have redecorated the interior to country colours and the outside has been painted this spring.

Welcome to Abbeyfields!
